Help Make San Diego sustainable for the arts & community: sign this petition

Sign this petition for city wide rent control in San Diego (literally be a minute of your time).
Rentals have had an immense impact on the arts in this city. On things such as live/work rentals, artists studios, galleries, not-for-profit art organizations, and museums. The City of San Diego has courted artists and organizations with low rents. Only to pull the rug when more immediate profits are to be made. The NTC is one of many models for this City's priorities. Not only to the arts, but the overall community. Those responsible make up ridiculous excuses for their blunders. Such as, ' we thought philanthropists would step up to fund the plan' -– NTC Director. As if there were an abundance of arts and culture philanthropists here. How many of these directors and planners actually have a background in art?

The momentum of gentrification in this city is a constant, often times described as growth and expansion. For areas like the Barrio Logan. The City, Nasco, and yes, the developers, are hoping for higher rents and property prices. Even some of the artist friendly ones who might say otherwise. There is a belief, that the revitalization of the area will increase profits in the arts community. Thus, the higher rents will remain affordable and desirable. A notion that might ring true if we were talking about a local industry that actually had a functioning market economy. An issue I've yet to hear even considered in this discourse.

Rental prices have exceeded income and wages in San Diego. These dramatic increases are short sighted and will lead to a massive migration of long time residents and their children. College students will be forced to move away because of the cost of living. Local pride in community will dwindle as natives are forced to relocate. These factors and more will lead to long term economic disaster. I welcome your thoughts and encourage you to sign this petition.
