The usage of the word "urban" is like "street art". Its not a city, culture, or movement. Urban, street art, is now a fashion, branding, phenomenon that popularizes and impersonates counter cultures. Critics, dealers and curators are the culprits behind the commercialization of the urban, street, art, rage. Urban, is now a household expression in the suburbs, strip malls, department stores, couture, and of course the contemporary art museums. See, Obey in the museum. Wear Obey from the outfitters and Nordstroms. So no, "urban" means "white", upper, middle-class. In dispassionate reference to the other, subversives, counter cultures. Some being black, others being a murky grey. Kind of like the brand Pier 1 Imports, relative to African sculpture, art, and figurines. Word...
